What to Look for when Buying Outdoor Light Boxes

Buying an Outdoor Light Box

At times, it can be tricky to choose the right outdoor advertising display. The best display for your needs is out there, though, and our handy guide is here to help you find it. We’ll give you all the advice you need on choosing and using the right weather-friendly display, as well as giving a run-down of the different outdoor light boxes on offer.

Your outdoor signage is the first part of your business seen by any potential employee, customer or investor. This is just one of the many reasons stylish signage options like outdoor light boxes are so popular right now. If you want to make a good first impression, your outdoor light box needs to cast your business in a good light.

So when you choose that signage, what do you need to know?

What Is an Outdoor Light Box?

Designed to draw attention to themselves in any outdoor space, outdoor light boxes are weatherproof branded signs and displays used by businesses, event organisers and charities. They are one of the most popular outdoor illumination display products and are great for outdoor advertising where businesses want to capture the attention of those passing by. Coping with the weather is one of the biggest challenges for these displays so when you buy yours, there are considerations that need to be made.

How Do We Know LED Light Boxes Work?

Like any signage, your outdoor light boxes should make visible everything you have to offer a potential customer. Show the locals what you got! A lot of people will see your light boxes as they walk past the front of your business, so you need to keep these up to date as well as you do your social media and website.

When it comes to displaying your business’ Covid-19 policies, offers and hours, outdoor light boxes are known to be one of the best ways to go. People will be excited to read what is on display as the light box bathes your sign in backlighting, boosting your message. After all, it makes good sense to advertise directly to the people who are already near your business, as they are the most likely to come in and buy something. Some success stories include…

  • New product offers were presented by JD Sports using light boxes, and this ensured visibility to audiences entering the Trafford Centre while driving a great deal of awareness.

  • By adding bespoke illuminated menu light box displays to display services and prices in place of their original non-illuminated menu signage, Boots reduced the time that customers spent at their digital photo counters by 3 to 4 times.

  • Santander (formerly Abbey Banks) promoted their financial products using light boxes, and saw a sales increase of over 30%.

Which Outdoor Light Box Is Right for Me?

The light box display is widely accepted to be one of the most effective forms of advertising on the market today. Light boxes can be used both indoors and out, allowing your business premises to make the most of its all-important signage. The location and intended use of your light box will determine the type of display that works best for you. The following options are sure to grab the attention of passers-by and are ideal for advertising outside your business or in a forecourt area.

These outdoor light boxes are a great way to keep your customer base well-informed, as people can tell a lot about your business based on the products and offers you choose to advertise on your external and internal signage. Using a combination of colour and light to catch the potential customer’s eye, they will do far more to promote your business than any non-illuminated poster or sign.

Power Consumption:

The energy efficiency of fluorescent lights is drastically affected by their size and shape. Light emitting diodes (LEDs), on the other hand, are much more energy-efficient. Signs traditionally use fluorescent lighting for illuminated advertising. If you’re concerned with power consumption and longevity, though, it’s now understood that LED is a better option. When choosing your new outdoor light box, opting for LED lights will mean you don’t have to worry so much about power consumption.

Market research has shown that quicker customer processing, increased sales and better customer draw is provided by the illuminated advertising offered by outdoor light boxes when compared with non-illuminated advertising. If you want your signage to have its full effect, outdoor light boxes are the only way to go!

Designing for Outdoor Displays

Deciding what to put on outdoor graphics is sometimes trickier than expected. To save costs on new artwork, many businesses are tempted to simply repeat the same graphics that they use on their existing indoor banners. This can have a negative impact on the effectiveness of the display. As well as your competitors, designs used outdoors have to compete with often very complex and colourful landscapes that simply aren’t present when the design is displayed indoors.

The LED lighting provided by an outdoor light box can make up for some of the distractions of the surrounding area, but you can also use careful design to make sure your graphics work outdoors.

When choosing a background colour for your poster (and to a lesser extent a colour for the frame of your light box), using a colour too similar to the wall on which it is mounted can result in your message getting lost. It’s important that your design stands out against the background, even if that means stepping away from your brand colours. The more vibrant your colour scheme is, the better!

On a similar note, pay attention to darkness and brightness in your graphic background. As stylish as a matt black background may be, a light box will do a much better job of illuminating light, reflective colours.

Important factors to consider alongside colour include your message, text and size. A “call to action”, an eye-grabber and a “convincer” should all be present on large displays and those in high-traffic areas, but the message should also be short and concise. For example, you could display a weblink or telephone number alongside an offer with a limited time period. If there’s too much on your display to absorb when passing, or if the text is too small, your display might end up being ignored.
